The concert showcases innovative contemporary music that transforms various types of data into musical form.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThe concert features guest composer \u003Cstrong\u003EJonathan Berger\u003C\/strong\u003E, a professor at Stanford and a leading researcher on the intersections between data sonification and creative practice. His string quartet \u003Cstrong\u003EDoubles \u003C\/strong\u003E(2004), originally written for the St. Lawrence String Quartet, recalls songs of peace, freedom, and resistance and also draws inspiration from seventeenth-century ornamentation practices. \u003Cstrong\u003EViola Elegy\u003C\/strong\u003E (1987), by computer music pioneer \u003Cstrong\u003ECharles Dodge\u003C\/strong\u003E, draws its musical content from fractal structures. Minimalist composer \u003Cstrong\u003ESteve Reich\u003C\/strong\u003E\u2019s \u003Cstrong\u003EPiano Phase \u003C\/strong\u003E(1967), performed in this concert in a version for two marimbas, turns the concept of phasing \u2014 in which two musicians initially play in unison but drift further and further apart over time \u2014 into a gradual process that drives the entire piece. And \u003Cstrong\u003EChirping Stars \u003C\/strong\u003E(2012) by \u003Cstrong\u003EVisda Goudarzi\u003C\/strong\u003E and \u003Cstrong\u003EKatharina Vogt\u003C\/strong\u003E, a finalist in the conference\u2019s annual sonification competition, turns an analysis of the most popular musicians on Twitter into an electroacoustic reflection on social listening.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003ESonic Generator\u003C\/strong\u003E, Georgia Tech\u2019s contemporary chamber music ensemble-in-residence, explores the ways in which technology can transform how we create, perform and listen to music. The ensemble, comprised of some of the top classical musicians in Atlanta, works closely with Georgia Tech students and faculty in the School of Music and elsewhere on campus to present concerts that bring cutting-edge technologies to the world of contemporary classical music.
