A group of Tech students and alumni has developed a\nsystem to address those logistical issues in the wake of disaster, and earned\n$40,000 from Startup Chile to further develop its idea.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EThe team of students and alumni making up Tubing Operations\nfor Humanitarian Logistics (TOHL) will relocate to the South American country\nfor six months as part of a program initiated by the Chilean government to\nencourage entrepreneurial activity in its country.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003ETOHL makes use of coil tubing typically used in oil fields and\nemploys a helicopter to drop and arrange tubing from above, creating a way for\nwater to reach remote places following a disaster. The tubing, measuring about\nan inch in diameter, stays above ground and the process can result in getting\nwater to a community within 48 hours. It\u2019s durable enough to be used for up to\n100 years with oil, though this application shortens its life span. Using a\nhelicopter to unspool the tubing removes the obstacle of roads or paths that\nmay be blocked, washed out or destroyed.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003ETech alumnus Benjamin Cohen will be the first team member to\nhead to Chile in March, with fellow alumnus Apoorv Sinha and students Melissa\nMcCoy and Travis Horsley joining in May.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003E\u201cChile is the perfect place for us [to test TOHL],\u201d said\nMcCoy, a fourth-year chemical and biomolecular engineering major. The country\u2019s\nrecent earthquakes and forest fires provide the team with an opportunity to\ntest its system in a place that has experienced the disasters that TOHL aims to\naddress.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003E\u201cRight now we want to show that it works, and from that try\nto partner with [non-governmental organizations] and have the pipe get water to\na community that needs it,\u201d McCoy said.
