{"79251":{"#nid":"79251","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Enhanced Communications Training Offered for Graduate Students","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EGraduate students make up nearly a third of the Institute\u2019s\nstudent population, but some leave campus after numerous years in science and\ntechnology studies feeling they lack skills in one area: communication.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EAfter a few years of planning among the graduate Student\nGovernment Association (SGA), Communication Center and Library, the group has devised\na way to equip graduate students with enhanced communication skills through a\nnew Graduate Communication Certificate program.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003E\u201cWith Georgia Tech being an extremely technically minded\nschool, a really important skill students need to have when they graduate is to\nbe able to effectively communicate their technical ideas,\u201d said James Black,\npresident of the graduate SGA. While certain degree programs provide some of\nthese skills, Black said that currently there is not a way to show a potential\nemployer that a student has received communication training.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003E\u201cWe wanted to coalesce all the programs offered around\ncampus into one program so students can get the training that is desired when\nthey get into industry or academia,\u201d he added\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EStaff from the Library, Communication Center, Career\nServices, the Center for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning and\nCommunications and Marketing will teach courses on topics such as ethics, oral\npresentations, grant writing, web design, publishing research and visual\nrepresentation of data. The certificate does not merit a degree designation, though\nthe long-term goal of the program is to offer something accredited. For now,\nstudents receive a certificate of completion and can add the attainment to\ntheir resumes; the Library will track students\u2019 progress and can verify\ncompletion.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EEarning the Graduate Communication Certificate requires that\nstudents complete 13 workshops, each an hour to hour and a half in length,\nalong with a capstone project or activity. There is no time limit for students\nto complete the program, so participants may work at their own pace while\npursuing degrees.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EThere is no GPA or academic requirement for the program,\naside from it being open to only graduate students enrolled at the Institute. Since the program opened at the start of the spring semester, 25 students have already signed up to participate.
