{"98641":{"#nid":"98641","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Creating Leaders 40 Feet in the Air","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EYou can learn a lot about yourself when you\u2019re 40 feet in\nthe air, dangling above the ground while swaying on a two-inch-wide guide wire.\nYou\u2019ll also learn more about the people surrounding you. Those are the goals at\nGeorgia Tech\u2019s Leadership Challenge Complex, an innovative, on-campus\neducational lab that welcomes nearly 4,000 people a year. The course and\naccompanying workshops are specifically designed for groups. \u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003E\u201cWe want individuals to walk away with a clear understanding\nof how they can work more effectively as part of a group,\u201d said David Knobbe,\nassistant director for the campus recreation at Georgia Tech. \u201cThe experiences\nwe provide challenge individuals to evaluate their own behavior and\ncontributions to the group. Our goal is to help them to use insights gleaned\nfrom the experience as a base for planning more effective behavior in the roles\nthey play at work and in every aspect of their lives.\u201d\n\n\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThe complex is open to Georgia Tech, community and corporate\ngroups for half-day (four hours) and full-day (eight hour) sessions.\nParticipants climb cargo nets, walk a tight rope and hop from suspended\nplatforms. The course ends with either a zip-line ride or leaping off the\n40-foot-high structure (while harnessed). \n\n\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EIt\u2019s not as easy as it sounds though. Course facilitators\ncreate complex challenges for group interaction. For example, an instructor may\nrequire that all team members must be on the small platform before anyone can\nmove to the next one. Or all team members must be within an arm\u2019s reach while\nwalking the tightropes.\n\n\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EGeorgia Tech staff members and students supervise the course\nand teach the leadership skills. \n\n\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cThose skills have been invaluable for me while working at the\nGeorgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI),\u201d explained Austin Ward, an Electrical\nEngineer undergraduate student who has served as a course facilitator since\n2010. \u201cI\u2019m better able to read the personalities of my co-workers and the\ndynamics of our GTRI groups because of the principles I\u2019ve learned and taught\nat the complex.
